Hi-Fi Restaurant Serving Midwest Comfort Food: Side A
Debuting in SF's Mission District in May, Chill DJ Tunes & Italian Wine List Make This One of the Most Fun New Restaurants Around

Large portions. Midwest comfort food with California freshness. A badass playlist from a co-owner who doubles as DJ. A cozy, packed neighborhood spot that has drawn crowds since it opened. This is husband-wife Caroline and Parker Brown’s new Side A in the beloved (for 27 years!) Universal Café space in San Francisco’s Mission district. And it is special.
I’ve been to a few hundred restaurants this year already and Side A is easily one of the most fun. It started with a warm greeting, records lining the walls, one of my underrated soul faves (Lee Dorsey) spinning on the record player, thoughtful natural wines on the chalkboard. Sincere service sealed the deal, as did an impromptu conversation with diners and longtime neighborhood locals next to us. Is the food as strong as the vibes? Yes.
